From Damaturu to Potiskum the road distance is roughly 60-80 km and takes around 1.5-2.5 hours by road depending on conditions; travel is by shared taxi or private car.
Maiduguri / Kano (major airports): For more frequent national connections travellers often fly into Maiduguri (MIU) or Kano (KAN) and continue by road. Road journeys from these larger airports to Potiskum are long (several hours) and typically require a combination of intercity buses or hired vehicles.

Bus / Shared taxis: Road travel is the main option: intercity buses, commercial minibuses and shared taxis connect Potiskum with Damaturu, Maiduguri and other regional centres. Services can be irregular; allow extra travel time and use established operators where possible. Within the town, motorcycle taxis (okada) and tricycles serve short trips.
How to Get Around Potiskum#
Road transport dominates: shared minibuses and taxis for intercity travel, and motorcycle taxis for short local trips. For longer transfers hire a car and driver to ensure reliability and safety.
- Intercity buses and shared taxis (₦200-₦3,000) - Shared taxis and commercial minibuses provide the main links between Potiskum and nearby cities (Damaturu, Maiduguri, Kano). They run frequently but timetables are informal; vehicles range from minibuses to larger coaches. Travel times depend heavily on road conditions and security advisories.
- Motorcycle taxis (okada) (₦50-₦500) - Motorcycles are very common for short trips inside Potiskum and nearby settlements. They are fast and flexible but offer limited protection; agree a price before riding and avoid riding after dark if possible due to safety concerns.

Expect higher costs but more predictable timing and the ability to stop en route. Use established rental firms or hotel-arranged drivers.
