Postojna Cave
Archaeological Site Extensive Slovenian karst cave system with show caves
Postojna Cave, a karst show cave in Slovenia, features an electric train ride through large caverns, stalactites and stalagmites. Guided tours introduce cave geology and the native proteus (olm) salamander.
Postojna Cave is a karst show cave system near the town of Postojna in southwestern Slovenia, developed for tourism with an underground train and organised visitor routes. It is one of Slovenia’s best-known cave attractions and a major regional tourist destination.
The visitor experience combines a short train ride into the cave followed by guided walks through large caverns and past extensive speleothem formations. The site also hosts displays and research on cave fauna, including the blind salamander known as the Proteus.
The cave has been a tourist destination since the 19th century and has been developed with pathways, lighting and the underground rail connection to allow public access to its larger chambers while limiting impact on the cave environment.
Located a few kilometres from the town of Postojna, the cave sits in a karst landscape of collapsed dolines and limestone plateaus in southwestern Slovenia and is reached by road from nearby towns and major highways.
- Visitor train: The cave system is traversed by an underground tourist train on the standard visitor circuit, which makes deeper sections accessible without long underground walks.
What to See #
- Underground train and show route: The electric cave train and visitor route that carries visitors into the show-cave sections, covering the accessible sightseeing circuit.
- Main caverns and formations: Major caverns and galleries such as the large central halls used for concerts and public visits, with extensive stalactite and stalagmite formations.
- Proteus displays and vivarium: A vivarium and displays dedicated to the blind salamander (Proteus) and other subterranean fauna associated with the Karst system.

Tips for Visiting Postojna Cave #
- Buy Postojna Cave tickets online and choose an early or late time slot to avoid the largest guided groups that form in mid-day; online booking guarantees a place on a timed train-and-walking tour.
- Allow time to join the cave's guided circuit (which includes the electric cave train) rather than only viewing the entrance area-many visitors underestimate how long the full tour takes and miss interior highlights.
- Combine Postojna Cave with Predjama Castle using the regular shuttle service or a combined ticket so you don't waste time on separate transfers-the two attractions are close and commonly visited on the same day.
Best Time to Visit Postojna Cave #
For Postojna Cave, visit in shoulder seasons (April-May or September-October) to avoid peak summer crowds while tours operate normally.
