Possenhofen Castle

Possenhofen Castle (Schloss Possenhofen) is a lakeside estate on Lake Starnberg in Bavaria, Germany, best known for its 19th‑century association with the Bavarian royal family and Empress Elisabeth of Austria. The estate occupies a prominent position on the western shore of the lake.

The main interest for visitors is the palace exterior and its parkland setting on the lakeshore; the château’s appearance and lakeside terraces are the principal features seen from public paths. The building is historically associated with the Bavarian ducal family and their summer residence activities in the 19th century.

The site originated as a manorial estate and underwent significant 19th‑century redevelopment when it became a royal summer residence; it is particularly remembered for its connection to Elisabeth of Austria, who spent part of her youth there.
