Northern Portugal (Porto, Minho, Douro)
April in the Douro Valley and along the northern coast warms further and shows true spring: blossoms appear on riverside terraces and wineries start pruning and vineyard work intensifies. Occasional Atlantic storms can still give heavy showers, but there are also long, pleasant days for river cruises and scenic drives over the Ponte da Arrábida. Trail conditions improve; pack a rain shell, and if heading into higher hills, bring a warmer mid-layer for chilly mornings.
Central Portugal & Serra da Estrela (Coimbra, Aveiro, mountains)
April brings variable weather: sunny, warm days can sit alongside sudden showers pushed in from the Atlantic, making it prime time for wildflower displays across central plains. Serra da Estrela’s lower routes are excellent for hiking while higher ridges may still feel raw after storms. Tourist towns see a gentle uptick in visitors as holiday weekends arrive; packing a waterproof and flexible layers will keep you comfortable on changing days.
Lisbon & Tagus Valley (Lisbon, Cascais, Sintra, Évora)
April is often one of the prettiest months: warm, sunny days alternate with brief showers and Sintra’s forests look lush under changing light. Lisbon will be comfortable for long walks, tram rides and rooftop bars, with daytime temperatures commonly in the high teens to low twenties. Tourist numbers begin to rise around Easter weekends - book popular attractions in advance and bring a light jacket for cooler nights.
Alentejo & Interior South (Évora plains, Alentejo hills)
April brings steadily warmer days and fragrant countryside; towns like Monsaraz and Évora are pleasant for strolling before summer heat arrives. Spring wildflowers and migratory birds enliven river corridors and reservoirs, and outdoor dining resumes. Pack a light jacket for evenings and a hat for long, sunny walks among megaliths and olive groves.
Algarve (Faro, Lagos, Sagres, eastern coast)
April often feels Mediterranean - dry, sunny and warming into the late teens and low twenties, perfect for cliff walks and boat excursions from Albufeira or Portimão. Fewer tourists and longer daylight hours create ideal conditions for photographing the coast and taking boat tours to sea caves. Pack sun protection and a waterproof shell for an occasional shower or windy day on the exposed west-facing beaches.
Madeira (Funchal, levadas, high peaks)
April is a lovely month for levada walks and gardens: mild temperatures and longer daylight let you explore Funchal, Ribeiro Frio and the flower shows that preview the big spring festival. Mountain weather is still variable with possible fog on ridge routes, so allow extra time for changes and bring warm layers. Hiking is superb now and accommodation is less crowded than in summer.
Azores (São Miguel, Pico, Faial, Flores)
April greets visitors with an energetic mix of sun and passing squalls; São Miguel’s crater lakes and Furnas are increasingly pleasant for walking and hot-spring visits. Boat trips for sea life become more regular and the island shows bright horticultural life. Layered clothing is essential as microclimates can shift quickly, and be prepared for sudden wet spells on coastal trails.
