Porto Cathedral

Porto Cathedral (Sé do Porto) is the city’s principal cathedral located in the historic centre of Porto, Portugal, with origins in the Romanesque period. It occupies a prominent hilltop position and is a key landmark in the city’s UNESCO-listed historic area.

The building combines a Romanesque core with Gothic and later Baroque modifications; significant internal elements include a Gothic cloister and richly decorated chapels added in subsequent centuries. The cathedral remains an active seat of the diocese and is noted for its architectural layering spanning medieval to early modern periods.

Construction began in the 12th century with major additions and renovations over the following centuries, reflecting changing liturgical and stylistic needs. The cloister dates largely to the 14th century while interior decorative campaigns continued into the 17th and 18th centuries.

Geographically the cathedral sits on a steep hill above Porto’s Ribeira riverside district, close to the Douro River and within the city’s historic core, making it easily reachable on foot from central Porto.
