Main image

Portchester Castle is a historic fortress on the Hampshire coast in southern England, built around and within a large late Roman fort. It is one of the best-preserved Roman fort sites in Britain and later became a medieval castle.

The site combines a wide Roman curtain wall and towers with a later medieval inner ward and keep; the ramparts walk around the Roman enclosure gives views across Portsmouth Harbour and the Solent. The inner ward contains surviving medieval domestic ranges and a keep area open to visitors.

The original stone fort was erected in the late 3rd century AD as a coastal defensive installation. From the Norman period onward the Roman enclosure was adapted into a medieval castle and administrative centre; in later centuries the site was also used for imprisonment and military purposes in various conflicts.

Portchester lies on the shore of Portsmouth Harbour, close to the village of Portchester and the town of Fareham, on the south coast of England, a short drive north of the city of Portsmouth.

  • Location tip: Located on the eastern shore of Portsmouth Harbour, adjacent to the village of Portchester and visible from the A27 road and nearby car parks.
  • What to see: The castle combines a Roman coastal fort (late 3rd century AD) with medieval castle structures and offers extensive ramparts for walking and viewing the harbour.
