Porta Nigra
Monument Roman stone city gate in Trier, remarkably preserved
Trier’s Porta Nigra is a well-preserved Roman city gate built from grey sandstone; visitors climb its ramps, inspect masonry and explore the city’s Roman archaeology.
Porta Nigra is a large Roman city gate in Trier, Germany, notable for its monumental stone construction and exceptional state of preservation. The gate dates to the late 2nd century CE and originally formed part of the city’s Roman walls.
The structure comprises massive sandstone blocks assembled into a two-towered gateway with internal passageways and staircases; visitors can access upper levels to view the city. In the medieval period parts of the gate were converted for religious use and later restoration work in the 19th century revealed much of the original Roman fabric.
Located in Trier’s historic centre, Porta Nigra stands as a prominent example of Roman urban architecture north of the Alps and is included in the city’s Roman Monument ensemble protected by UNESCO.
- UNESCO status: Known as the best-preserved Roman city gate north of the Alps, it is part of Trier's ensemble of Roman monuments inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Porta Nigra is in the pedestrian old town of Trier. Arrive by train at Trier Hauptbahnhof (served by Deutsche Bahn regional and intercity services) and then walk into the centre-the gate is about a 10-15 minute walk from the Hauptbahnhof (roughly 800-1,200 m) through the pedestrian streets.
By car Trier is reachable from nearby motorways; for example it is about 50 km north of Luxembourg City via the A1/E44. There are short-term parking options around the city centre if you drive, but the best access is by rail and on-foot once in Trier.
Tips for Visiting Porta Nigra #
- Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid the coach groups that arrive from river cruises and organized tours at midday.
- Buy a ticket to enter the gate and climb the interior walkways - the best panoramic views over Trier come from the raised walkways inside rather than from the outside.
- Combine your visit with Trier Cathedral and the Roman imperial baths, both a short walk away; many visitors stay only long enough for a photo and miss the small archaeological displays inside Porta Nigra.
