Arch Roman city gate in Verona with ancient remains
A Roman gate in Verona, Porta Leoni exposes ancient city walls and archaeological remains near the Arena. Visitors pass by on walks through Verona’s historic center and to see classical stonework.
Porta Leoni is a Roman city gate in Verona, Veneto, preserving visible remains from the Roman period (dating to the 1st century BC-1st century AD). It is one of the surviving gateways of ancient Verona’s defensive circuit.
Remnants include parts of the gateway structure, sections of the dressed-stone façade and several reused decorative and funerary reliefs set close to the modern pavement. The surviving masonry and fragments are compact and best viewed from the adjacent streets and small pedestrian areas.
The gate was built by the Romans as part of Verona’s city walls and served as a controlled entry point. It underwent repairs and modifications in later periods and has been the subject of archaeological excavation and conservation since the 19th century.
The remains sit within Verona’s historic centre in Veneto, a short walk from the Arena and other Roman monuments. The site is accessible from the city’s pedestrian streets and is integrated into the urban fabric rather than standing in an isolated archaeological park.
- Roman remains: Fragments of Roman sculpture and funerary reliefs are set into the pavement and nearby displays, making close-up inspection possible at street level.
- Accessibility: Located within Verona's historic centre, it is easily reached on foot from other Roman sites such as Porta Borsari and the Arena.
