Porta Capena
Monument Ancient Roman city gate near the Circus Maximus
Porta Capena survives as an archaeological reference in Rome, linked historically to the Appian Way and nearby ruins; it’s of interest to travelers exploring ancient city layers and the Baths of Caracalla area.
Porta Capena was an ancient gate in Rome associated with the Servian Wall and with the southern approaches to the city, notably the start of the Appian Way. It appears in Roman literary and epigraphic sources as a landmark on Rome’s early road network.
In antiquity the gate functioned as an arrival and departure point on routes heading south and was near low-lying areas outside the early city. Over time the gate lost significance as Rome’s walls and urban layout changed, and its exact remains are no longer a prominent standing monument.
Historical references describe the gate in Republican and Imperial sources and connect it to events and traffic on the Appian Way. The site has been subject to archaeological study alongside other early-Roman topographical features.
Porta Capena was located in the southern sector of ancient Rome, near where the Appian Way left the city and close to the valley that later developments altered; its area now lies within Rome’s modern urban fabric in the Lazio region.
- Location reference: Ancient Roman sources place it at or near the submerged valley that became the starting point of the Appian Way into southern Italy.
