Pool Malebo

Pool Malebo, historically known as Stanley Pool, is a broad, lake-like widening of the Congo River where the river slows and spreads out. It forms a significant geographic feature on the Congo River and is situated between the capitals Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of the Congo) and Brazzaville (Republic of the Congo).

The area is notable for its riverine islands, shallow shoals and communities along the shoreline; it functions as an important local transport and fishing zone. The wide waterbody gives the river an almost lake appearance and influences river navigation and local ecology.

Pool Malebo formed naturally as part of the Congo Rivers course and has long been central to transport and settlement in the region; it has been used for river traffic and local fishing for centuries. Urban development on its shores increased with the growth of Kinshasa and Brazzaville in the 20th century.

The feature lies upriver from the Atlantic estuary within central Africa; Kinshasa is situated on the southern shore and Brazzaville on the northern shore, making the pool a prominent landmark in the region.
