Main image

The Pontic Mountains are a major mountain chain along northern Turkey bordering the Black Sea, forming a roughly east-west arc across the country. The range includes high alpine sectors and temperate montane forests and is one of Turkey’s principal mountain systems.

The range contains high peaks and plateaus used for hiking and grazing, rugged coastal escarpments and pockets of temperate rainforest. Notable natural highlights include high-alpine meadows, glacial cirques and deep river valleys; some peaks exceed 3,900 metres in the eastern Kaçkar subrange. The mountains also host agricultural terraces and tea plantations on their lower slopes near the coast.

The Pontic chain developed through tectonic uplift as part of the collision and compression of the Anatolian plate; different subranges have distinct geology and topography. Over time the area has supported seasonal pastoralism, small-scale agriculture and more recently mountain tourism and conservation initiatives.

Geographically the mountains run along Turkey’s northern edge between the coastal plain of the Black Sea and the central Anatolian plateau. Major coastal cities adjacent to the range include Trabzon and Rize in the east, with the ranges extending westward along the Black Sea coast.

  • When to go: Best hiking season is late spring to early autumn when high passes and alpine meadows are snow-free; heavy rainfall on the northern slopes creates lush forests.
  • Good base for treks: Ayder Plateau in the Kaçkar area is a common base for treks and is accessible by road from Rize, offering hot springs and mountain views.

What to See #

  • Kaçkar Mountains: Part of the northern Anatolian mountain system, forming steep ranges and high plateaus that face the Black Sea and include pronounced alpine zones and temperate rainforests.
  • Küre Mountains: A northwestern sector containing the Küre Mountains National Park with dense forests, karstic terrain and coastal escarpments on the southern Black Sea shore.
  • Pontic foothills and coastal terraces: Highland plateaus and river valleys used for pastoralism, with settlements and tea-growing slopes especially in the eastern sectors around Rize and Trabzon.

How to Get to Pontic Mountains #

The Pontic Mountains (Doğu Karadeniz Dağları) form the mountainous zone along Turkey’s Black Sea coast. The range is approached from Black Sea coastal cities such as Trabzon, Rize and Samsun by regional roads that climb inland from the coast; access to particular valleys or peaks is by local provincial roads from those cities.

Because the range extends for many hundreds of kilometres, plan travel to a specific town or trailhead (for example, a coastal city as your base) and then continue by car or local minibus into the mountains.

Tips for Visiting Pontic Mountains #

  • Plan travel for late spring through early autumn when high mountain passes and village roads are usually open; winter brings heavy snow and many access roads on the Black Sea side may be closed.
  • Use Trabzon or Rize as practical gateways and then head inland to entry points such as Çamlıhemşin and Ayder for the highland plateaus - these towns serve as common bases for exploring the Kaçkar subrange.
  • Skip the crowded coastal resorts and spend time in traditional mountain villages and tea-terrace viewpoints inland; small guesthouses in the plateaus give access to remote trails and pastoral scenery that many travelers miss.
