Pontefract Castle

Pontefract Castle is a ruined medieval castle in Pontefract, West Yorkshire, England (coordinates latitude 53.6955, longitude -1.30394). It was originally established after the Norman Conquest and became an important fortress in medieval England.

The site displays substantial ruined masonry including the central keep and curtain walls; it is visited for its historic masonry, interpretation panels and the castle earthworks.

The castle was founded by the De Lacy family in the late 11th century. It later played roles in national politics and warfare; King Richard II was held in custody at Pontefract in 1400 and the site was besieged several times during the 17th-century English Civil War before being slighted.

The castle stands within the town of Pontefract in West Yorkshire, occupying a prominent site above the town where medieval defensive earthworks remain visible.
