Ponte Vecchio

Ponte Vecchio is a medieval stone bridge over the Arno River in Florence noted for its line of shops built along the span. The bridge retains its historic character with narrow shopfronts and a covered passage across the river.

The structure rests on a series of arches that carry the continuous row of small shops; today the shops are mainly jewellers, goldsmiths and tourist-oriented trades. The bridge’s central location connects the historic centre with the Oltrarno district.

The present bridge dates to the medieval period and has been rebuilt and maintained over centuries while preserving its commercial function. It is one of Florence’s most photographed landmarks.

Ponte Vecchio crosses the Arno in central Florence and links the Piazza della Signoria area with the Oltrarno on the river’s south bank.
