Ponte Pietra

Ponte Pietra is an ancient stone bridge crossing the Adige River in Verona and is the city’s oldest surviving river crossing. The structure incorporates Roman-origin masonry alongside later medieval and modern repairs.

The bridge forms a scenic, historic crossing in Verona’s city centre and provides close views of the Adige’s river course and adjacent riverside buildings, with good photographic vantage points from both riverbanks. It connects the historic core near the Roman Theatre with the opposite bank and pedestrian routes to Castel San Pietro.

Originally founded in the Roman period, the bridge was modified in the medieval era and further rebuilt across centuries. It was destroyed in 1945 and reconstructed in the 1950s using many of the original stones recovered from the riverbed.

Located in Verona’s historic centre, the bridge spans the Adige and sits within the compact medieval and Roman urban fabric of the city.
