The Pont du Gard is an ancient Roman aqueduct bridge crossing the Gardon near Vers-Pont-du-Gard in southern France. It dates to the 1st century AD and is celebrated for its three-tier masonry arches.
The structure stands approximately 48.8 metres high and extends about 275 metres along the river corridor, with three stacked arcades forming its most striking visual element. The site includes a visitor centre, riverside paths and viewing platforms that allow close inspection of the masonry and panoramic views of the valley.
Constructed by Roman engineers to carry water to the city of Nîmes, the Pont du Gard was part of an aqueduct system that delivered water over many kilometres. It remained visible and in use in various ways through the centuries and was preserved as a monument of Roman engineering.
The bridge sits above the Gardon river near the village of Vers-Pont-du-Gard, roughly 20 kilometres north of Nîmes, set in a rocky Mediterranean river valley.
- Dimensions: The bridge has three tiers, rises to about 48.8 metres in height and spans roughly 275 metres across the Gardon river.
