Ponferrada Castle

Ponferrada Castle, also known as the Castle of the Templars, is a large medieval fortress in the town of Ponferrada in Castile and León, Spain. It is one of the most complete and prominent Templar fortifications in Spain.

The complex includes thick curtain walls, multiple defensive towers, an inner keep and open courtyards; parts of the castle accommodate a museum with archaeological displays and historical interpretation. Visitors commonly tour the battlements, internal spaces and exhibition areas to learn about the castle’s military and religious history.

The site was developed and expanded by the Knights Templar in the 12th and 13th centuries to control and protect the route of pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago; it was later modified in subsequent centuries and restored in modern times for conservation and public access. The castle’s layout reflects successive phases of medieval military architecture.

Sited within the urban area of Ponferrada in the El Bierzo region, the castle overlooks the town and the nearby Sil river and is easily reached from the local streets and Camino routes.
