Polesie National Park
National Park Polish park protecting vast marshes and peatland ecosystems
Polesie National Park in Lublin preserves peat bogs, oxbow lakes and wet meadows; birdwatchers and canoeists explore quiet waterways, boardwalks and seasonal wildlife in this lowland marsh landscape.
Polesie National Park (Poleski Park Narodowy) is a protected wetland area in Lublin Voivodeship in eastern Poland, established as a national park in 1990. It conserves a large complex of peat bogs, marshes and small lakes characteristic of the Polesie region.
The park is known for extensive peatlands, reedbeds and shallow lakes that support migratory and breeding waterfowl and other wetland species. A system of marked trails and raised boardwalks gives access to the key marsh and bog zones, and observation hides and towers are placed at chosen viewpoints for wildlife watching. Educational panels and visitor information points introduce the park’s ecosystems and responsible visiting practices.
Protection of the area grew from earlier local and national conservation efforts; the national park was created to consolidate several reserves and safeguard the region’s peatland habitats. Management since establishment has focused on wetland restoration, peatland protection and species monitoring.
The park lies in eastern Poland near the villages of Urszulin and Włodawa in Lublin Voivodeship, close to the Polish-Belarusian-Ukrainian borderlands. The landscape is flat and dominated by wetlands and small lakes within the lowland Polesie plain.
- Best time to visit: Peak bird migration occurs in spring and autumn, making those seasons best for birdwatching and wetlands activity.
- Trails and access: A network of wooden boardwalks and short marked trails provides close access across peat bogs and reedbeds without disturbing sensitive habitats.
How to Get to Polesie National Park #
Polesie (Poleski Park Narodowy) is accessed from the village of Urszulin, which serves as the main gateway and visitor centre for the park. By car you typically drive east from Lublin on main roads toward Włodawa and then follow local roads to Urszulin; the drive from Lublin is on the order of around 80-100 km and typically takes on the order of 1-1.5 hours depending on route and traffic.
There are regional bus services from Lublin toward Włodawa with connections onward toward Urszulin (regional PKS services); from Urszulin short local roads and footpaths lead into the park’s trails and boardwalks.
Tips for Visiting Polesie National Park #
- Begin at the park's main visitor center (Urszulin is the usual gateway to the reserve) to pick up trail maps, seasonal advice and information on boardwalk routes and observation hides.
- Plan visits for spring or autumn migration for the best birdwatching; the park's wetlands and peat bogs are busiest with wildlife during those windows and quieter for people on weekdays.
- Take the marked boardwalk trails and hide platforms rather than trying unmarked routes-the constructed trails protect sensitive habitats and lead to viewpoints that many visitors miss when they stick to the main entrances.
