Point of Rocks (Kansas)

Point of Rocks is a distinct sandstone outcrop and promontory on the high plains of southwestern Kansas that stands out against the surrounding prairie. It has long been used as a navigation landmark.

The feature is a conspicuous rocky ridge rising from otherwise flat or gently rolling grassland and is notable for its visibility across the surrounding plains. It is visited for its historical associations and as an example of the region’s geology.

In the 19th century the outcrop was used by Native American groups and by 19th-century travellers as a waypoint on routes that included the Santa Fe Trail and later overland mail and stage routes. It appears repeatedly in diaries and guidebooks for its role as a natural guidepost.

The formation sits on the high plains of southwestern Kansas near the Cimarron drainage, alongside historic trails and rural roads. The surrounding landscape is semiarid grassland used for ranching and low-intensity agriculture.
