Poenari Castle
Castle Ruined mountaintop fortress associated with Vlad the Impaler
Poenari Castle perches on a steep Argeș cliff associated with Vlad Ţepeş; tourists climb the fortress stairs to inspect medieval ruins and peer down at the Transylvanian valleys below.
Poenari Castle is a ruined medieval fortress in Argeș County, Romania, perched high on a narrow rocky ridge above the Argeș valley and associated historically with Vlad III (Vlad the Impaler). The visible remains sit dramatically above the surrounding landscape and attract visitors for both history and views.
The site is reached by a long stairway of 1,480 steps that climbs from the roadside car park to the castle terrace, and the ruins are compact with fragments of defensive walls and towers. Visitors come to inspect the fortifications and the vantage points overlooking the surrounding mountains and the reservoir below.
Poenari originated in the medieval period and was repaired and reinforced in the 15th century, notably during the time of Vlad III, who used mountain fortresses in the region for defence and administration. The castle fell into ruin in subsequent centuries.
The castle sits in the Făgăraș/Argeș mountainous area of southern Romania, above the Argeș River valley near the modern localities of Arefu and Curtea de Argeș and within driving distance of the Transfăgărășan route and Vidraru reservoir.
- Stairway: A steep climb of roughly 1,480 steps leads from the road to the ruined fortress; the path is exposed in places and offers close views of the narrow valley below.

How to Get to Poenari Castle #
Poenari Castle is reached by road to the village of Arefu from Curtea de Argeș or via the Transfăgărășan route; there is roadside parking below the site. From the parking area you must climb the steep stairway of roughly 1,480 stone steps to reach the fortress ruins-there is no direct road access to the castle itself.
Tips for Visiting Poenari Castle #
- Start at Arefu and plan to climb early in the day-the climb to Poenari Castle is steep (commonly cited as about 1,480 steps) and much cooler with far fewer visitors before midday.
- Access the site from the DN7C/Transfăgărășan side and check road and weather conditions first: the Transfăgărășan and the forest road can be closed or difficult after rain or outside the summer season.
- If you prefer to avoid the stairs, stop at the lookout points along the road below the castle-these provide dramatic views of the citadel and surrounding valley that many visitors overlook.
Best Time to Visit Poenari Castle #
Best visited in summer (June-September) when mountain roads and the hiking route to the castle are most likely to be open and safe.
