Plaza San Martín is a historic city square in the Retiro neighborhood of Buenos Aires, dedicated to the national liberator General José de San Martín. The square combines parkland, monuments and surrounding heritage buildings.

At the heart of the plaza stands an equestrian monument to San Martín; lawns, pathways and mature trees create a formal urban park used by residents and visitors. The square is bordered by significant early 20th-century commercial and residential buildings.

The square evolved during the 19th and early 20th centuries alongside the growth of Buenos Aires as a port and capital, and it has long served as a site for commemorations and public gatherings.

Plaza San Martín lies in the Retiro district, close to major avenues such as Avenida Santa Fe and near the Retiro railway and bus terminals.

Plaza San Martín sits in the Retiro district immediately west of Retiro rail and bus terminals. From downtown take the Subte (Line C) to Retiro station or any commuter Mitre/San Martín/Belgrano train into Retiro; the plaza is a 3-5 minute walk from the station exits. Many city buses (colectivos) also stop at the Retiro transport hub if arriving by road; if driving you are already in central Buenos Aires (street access from Avenida Santa Fe and Avenida del Libertador).

• Visit early in the morning on weekdays for the best light on the Monument to San Martín and to avoid the heavy tourist and commuter traffic that builds later in the day around Retiro.
• Approach the plaza from the pedestrian Calle Florida/Av. Santa Fe side or via Retiro transport hubs to arrive directly into the square rather than walking through busier surrounding streets.
• Look up and take time to appreciate the surrounding Belle Époque architecture-most visitors focus on the central monument and miss the Kavanagh building and period façades that frame the plaza.
