Plaza of Our Lady of the Pillar

The Plaza of Our Lady of the Pillar (Plaza del Pilar) is the principal public square in Zaragoza, Spain, centered on the Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar. It is the city’s main civic and religious open space and a primary draw for visitors to Zaragoza.

The plaza is framed by the Baroque basilica on one side and the medieval La Seo cathedral on another, with city hall and other civic buildings completing the ensemble; it is used for major religious observances and civic gatherings. The square is the focus of the annual Fiestas del Pilar each October, when large public ceremonies, processions and cultural events take place.

The basilica visible on the plaza was constructed largely during the 17th and 18th centuries and functions as a principal Marian shrine, while La Seo preserves medieval fabric and decorative traditions. The plaza sits on the west bank of the Ebro River in central Zaragoza and forms the ceremonial heart of the city.
