Plaza Mayor is a rectangular public square in central Madrid, Spain, built in the early 17th century during the Habsburg urban development of the city. It is one of Madrid’s principal historic squares and has been a focal point for markets and public life for centuries.
The square is ringed by three-storey residential buildings with arched porticoes at ground level and contains cafes and shops on its perimeter. People frequent the plaza for dining on outdoor terraces, guided walking tours, and public events held on the paved open space.
Construction was overseen in the early 1600s under the direction of the architect Juan Gómez de Mora, commissioned during the reign of Philip III.
