Plaza Dorrego is a historic public square in the San Telmo neighborhood of Buenos Aires known for its preserved 19th-century buildings and cobbled streets. It is one of the neighborhood’s primary public spaces and a center for antiques and cultural activity.

The square is best known for its weekend antique market and frequent outdoor tango demonstrations and street musicians. Small cafes and bars line the plaza and the surrounding Defensa street, making it a compact area for shopping, dining, and watching performances. The atmosphere is busiest on Sundays when vendors, tourists, and locals converge on the square.

San Telmo developed during the colonial and early national periods of Buenos Aires, and Plaza Dorrego became surrounded by residential and commercial buildings in the 19th century; many of those structures survive and give the square its historic character. The area has been continuously used as a market and meeting place through successive waves of urban change.

Plaza Dorrego sits in the heart of San Telmo, a short walk from Avenida Defensa and roughly 2 kilometers south of Plaza de Mayo in central Buenos Aires. The neighborhood is predominantly low-rise and characterized by narrow streets and frequent pedestrian activity.

• Mercado de San Telmo: A covered market a short walk from the square offering fresh food, antiques, and eateries, operating weekdays with an intensified market atmosphere on weekends.
• Parroquia San Pedro Telmo: An 18th/19th-century parish church facing the square that anchors the plaza visually and historically.

Plaza Dorrego is the central square of the San Telmo barrio on Defensa Street. It’s an easy walk from Plaza de Mayo (about 1 km / roughly 10-20 minutes along Defensa); the square is served by Buenos Aires’ Subte and many city buses (colectivos) that stop near San Telmo/Defensa. If driving, approach via Avenida de Mayo or Independencia and follow local streets into the San Telmo historic district (parking can be limited on weekends).

• Visit on Sunday morning for the Feria de San Telmo (Plaza Dorrego's famous antique fair), but arrive early to see the best stalls and avoid the midday crush of tourists.
• If you want a quieter experience, go on a weekday morning when cafes and antique shops are open but the large crowds are gone-this is also when local tango performances are more spontaneous.
• Don't just stay in the main square: wander the adjacent Defensa street and side alleys for smaller antiques shops, artisan stalls and impromptu tango that many visitors overlook.
