Place Vendôme is a formal square in Paris’s 1st arrondissement known for its classical architecture, luxury shops and the central victory column. The square dates stylistically to the late 17th century and has long been associated with high-end jewellery and hotels.
The central feature is a tall bronze-clad victory column commissioned in the Napoleonic era, surrounded by a regular polygon of stone façades that accommodate boutiques, private mansions and hotels. The square is noted for its compact, symmetrical layout and the concentration of luxury retailers around its perimeter.
The square was planned and built during the reign of Louis XIV and given its present classical façade ensemble in that period; it later acquired the central column and became associated with imperial and state functions. Over subsequent centuries the square has retained its commercial and institutional uses while the façades have been maintained and restored.
Place Vendôme sits in central Paris close to the Opéra and rue de la Paix. It is within walking distance of other central landmarks and forms part of the city’s core luxury shopping district.
