Place des Vosges
Park Historic Parisian square surrounded by uniform 17th-century buildings
One of Paris’s oldest planned squares in the Marais, built in the early 17th century with red-brick façades and arcades. Tourists stroll the square, visit Victor Hugo’s house, and sit at cafés beneath its colonnades.
Place des Vosges is a historic royal square in the Marais district of Paris, in the 3rd arrondissement. It dates from the early 17th century and is one of the earliest examples of a planned residential square in Paris.
The square is known for its perfectly regular brick-and-stone facades, vaulted arcades and a central formal garden. The piazza measures a roughly square plan and is framed by matching houses that originally housed aristocratic residences; the arrangement creates a compact, walkable public space. The square also contains the Maison de Victor Hugo museum within one of the buildings.
Commissioned by King Henri IV, construction took place in the early 1600s and the square was originally called the Place Royale. Over subsequent centuries the square retained its residential character while accommodating shops, galleries and museums that reflect Parisian urban life.
Place des Vosges sits in the heart of the Marais, east of the Seine and a short walk from the Bastille area. It is centrally located within Paris and easily reached by Metro and on foot from nearby arrondissements.
- Notable house: The square is lined by uniform 17th-century red-brick houses with vaulted arcades; look for the Maison de Victor Hugo at No. 6, which is a museum dedicated to the writer.
- Best viewing: Central landscaped garden with chestnut trees and benches provides a clear view across the squares symmetrical facades; morning and late afternoon light highlight the brick and stone detailing.
