Maison de Victor Hugo is the Parisian city museum located in the author’s former apartment at Place des Vosges. It preserves rooms, manuscripts and personal items related to Victor Hugo’s life and literary career.

The house presents the writer’s furnished living spaces, letters and portraits, together with displays on his political and literary activities. Several rooms open onto views of Place des Vosges, linking the museum to its historic urban setting.

Victor Hugo occupied the apartment at Place des Vosges during part of his life in the 19th century; the city later converted the home into a museum to preserve his papers and possessions. The museum documents Hugo’s development as a writer and his public life.

Take Metro line 1 to Saint‑Paul - the square is a very short (2-5 minute) walk - or get off at Bastille (lines 1, 5, 8) and walk about 8-10 minutes across Rue Saint‑Antoine. By car it’s a short drive from central Paris via Boulevard Henri‑IV or Rue de Rivoli; parking in the immediate area is limited.

• Go first thing after opening to experience the house before it fills - the museum is small and can feel crowded later in the day, so early visits let you linger in Hugo's rooms.
• Enter from Place des Vosges and work from the top floors down; the intimate upper rooms and original furnishings are the highlight and are easy to miss if you rush through.
• Pause in the square outside (Place des Vosges) after your visit - the house's setting is part of the experience and gives good photo opportunities with the façade.
