Place des Quinconces

The Place des Quinconces is a large public square in Bordeaux, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, laid out in the early 19th century and known as one of the biggest civic squares in Europe.

The square’s most prominent element is the Monument aux Girondins, a sculptural memorial and fountain ensemble that occupies the centre of the plaza. The monument and surrounding basins form the main focal point for photographs and promenades.

Broad paved esplanades and avenues of plane trees run across the square, creating long sightlines toward the river and the city. The open space is used for seasonal markets, fairs and public events.

The site was cleared and redesigned in the 19th century as part of Bordeaux’s urban redevelopment after the removal of older fortifications. The central memorial complex was added later in the century to commemorate victims of the political turmoil of the 1790s.

Sited near Bordeaux’s riverfront, the square sits between the historic centre and the Garonne, within walking distance of the city centre and its principal streets and quays.

• Best view: Good viewpoints from the south side provide framed views of the monument against the river and Bordeaux skyline.
• Events and markets: The open paved space is commonly used for festivals, markets and temporary exhibitions, so check event listings before visiting.

• Monument aux Girondins: Located at the western edge of the square, a large late-19th-century memorial complex dedicated to the Girondin deputies features a tall column, sculptural groups and basin fountains that form the square's visual centrepiece.
• Esplanade and tree-lined promenades: A broad open esplanade planted with rows of plane trees and wide promenades that stretch from the monument toward the Garonne river and the city centre.
