Place de l’Hôtel-de-Ville Esplanade de la Lib9ration is the broad square immediately in front of Paris’s city hall, the Hôtel de Ville, in the 4th arrondissement. The site functions as the principal civic esplanade for Paris and is closely associated with the municipal building that dominates its north side.
An open paved esplanade used for public gatherings, official ceremonies and temporary events sits directly before the Hôtel de Ville’s ornate 19th-century façade. The square provides a large, level space for demonstrations, festivals and occasional seasonal installations and is a short walk from the banks of the Seine.
The square developed around the municipal hall over several centuries; the Hôtel de Ville itself was set alight during the Paris Commune of 1871 and was rebuilt in the late 19th century under architects Théodore Ballu and Édouard Deperthes. Since reconstruction the piazza has served as the city’s main civic forecourt and event space.
Located in central Paris on the right bank of the Seine, the square sits in the 4th arrondissement immediately west of Île Saint-Louis and a short walk from Île de la Cité and Notre-Dame cathedral.
