Place de la Comédie

Place de la Comédie is the principal public square in central Montpellier, Occitania, France. It functions as the city’s main gathering space and transport hub.

The square is fronted by the city’s opera house and dominated by the central fountain commonly known as the Three Graces; the pedestrian plaza is lined with cafés and shops and is a focal point for street life. Tram stops and pedestrian routes converge here, making it a natural starting point for exploring Montpellier’s historic centre.

The area developed as Montpellier’s principal public space around the theatre and market streets; it has long served civic, commercial and social functions. Architectural and urban changes over the 18th to 20th centuries reinforced its role as the city’s main plaza.

Located in the heart of Montpellier, the square sits at the edge of the historic Écusson (old town) and is within easy walking distance of major civic buildings, shopping streets and the city’s main tram lines.
