Place de la Bastille
Square Historic Paris square site of former Bastille prison
Built on the Bastille prison site, the square now displays the July Column and the Opéra Bastille. Visitors arrive for revolutionary history, lively markets, cafés and the neighbourhood’s contemporary nightlife and demonstrations.
Place de la Bastille is a prominent public square in Paris on the site of the former Bastille fortress that was demolished after its storming in 1789. The square today is dominated by the commemorative July Column and by the modern Opéra Bastille building.
The square functions as a transport and cultural hub on the eastern edge of central Paris and is a meeting point for demonstrations and public events. It has been redeveloped several times since the 19th century and retains strong historical and civic significance.
Historically the fortress once stood here and its fall became a major event in the French Revolution; the physical fort was removed and later urban developments replaced it. The modern opera house opened in 1989 beside the column and square.
Place de la Bastille sits on the eastern side of central Paris near the Canal Saint-Martin and within easy walking distance of the Marais and Île Saint-Louis districts.
- Historical site: The site marks where the medieval Bastille fortress once stood; no large remains remain on site but the location is historically significant to the French Revolution.
What to See #
- July Column (Colonne de Juillet): The Colonne de Juillet, a tall commemorative column erected in the centre of the square commemorating the July Revolution of 1830.
- Opéra Bastille: The modern **Opéra Bastille**, a large contemporary opera house built on the site and opened in 1989 as part of Paris's cultural infrastructure.
How to Get to Place de la Bastille #
Place de la Bastille is served by Bastille station on Métro lines 1, 5 and 8; the square is immediately adjacent to the station exits (a short walk). It’s in central Paris, so most visitors arrive by metro; several bus routes also stop at or near the square.
Tips for Visiting Place de la Bastille #
- Plan around market and event days: the large Boulevard Richard-Lenoir market (Thursdays and Sundays) and frequent demonstrations at Bastille can make the square much busier - visit on a weekday morning for a quieter experience.
- Combine a visit with a walk along the Promenade Plantée (Coulée verte), which starts near Bastille and offers a quieter, elevated greenway many visitors overlook.
- If you're sensitive to crowds or demonstrations, check local news/calendars before visiting - Bastille is a common rallying point and can be closed or very busy during public events.
- Don't miss the July Column in the centre of the square and the nearby Opéra Bastille building; wander the surrounding side streets to find smaller cafés and quieter viewpoints.
Best Time to Visit Place de la Bastille #
Visit in spring or early autumn for comfortable weather and fewer tourists; the square can be crowded during events and in summer.
