Plaça d'Espanya, Barcelona
Square Major Barcelona square adjacent to transport hubs
A major Barcelona plaza at the foot of Montjuïc, surrounded by transport links and the former Arenas bullring; visitors pass through on their way to museums, the Magic Fountain and nearby viewpoints over the city.
Plaça d’Espanya is a major public square in the Sants-Montjuïc district of Barcelona, established for the 1929 International Exposition. It is one of the city’s principal traffic and event nodes and sits at the foot of the Montjuïc hill.
The square connects several important features: the former bullring turned shopping centre Arenas de Barcelona, the twin Venetian Towers that mark the avenue toward Montjuïc, and the broad Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina which leads up to the Palau Nacional and Magic Fountain. It is a transport interchange with metro, bus, and regional connections and a common starting point for visitors heading to the museums and parks on Montjuïc.
Plaça d’Espanya was laid out and redeveloped for the 1929 exposition and has since been adapted for modern traffic and events while retaining key monumental elements from that period. Later alterations have included the conversion of the Arenas bullring into a commercial and leisure complex.
The square sits on the southern edge of Barcelona’s Eixample grid at the base of Montjuïc, within the Sants-Montjuïc district. It is a short distance from Barcelona’s central areas and is straightforward to reach by metro and bus.
- History note: The square was rebuilt and repurposed for the 1929 International Exposition and functions today as a major transport and event hub serving Montjuïc and Fira de Barcelona.
- Best viewpoints: Evenings and weekends are busy; the rooftop of the Arenas complex and the stairways facing the Palau Nacional offer clear sightlines for photos of the square and the Montjuïc axis.
What to See #
- Arenas de Barcelona: A former bullring converted into a multi-level shopping and entertainment complex; the circular arena was preserved and a rooftop viewing area gives panoramic views over the square and the nearby Montjuïc slope.
- Venetian Towers: Two 47-metre towers built in a Venetian style that mark the main approach up Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina toward Montjuïc and the Palau Nacional.
- Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina: A large ceremonial avenue that runs from the square toward the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, flanked by the Magic Fountain and leading up the Montjuïc hill.

Tips for Visiting Plaça d'Espanya, Barcelona #
- Visit in the early morning or after 8pm: that's when tour groups and daytime shoppers have thinned and you get clearer views of the Venetian towers, the Fountain of the Magic Fountain complex, and easier access up Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina toward MNAC.
- Use the Espanya metro stop (Linea 1 and 3) to arrive - it drops you right at the square and saves a long walk across the busy roundabout; follow the pedestrian routes between the twin Venetian towers to reach the fountain and the promenade up Montjuïc.
- Don't skip the rooftop of Arenas de Barcelona (the old bullring): there's a public viewing terrace with an elevator/escalator that gives one of the best elevated perspectives over Plaça d'Espanya and the fountain ensemble, often missed by people who only stay at ground level.
- If you want to see the Magic Fountain show, check the show schedule in advance and arrive 30-45 minutes early to secure a good viewing spot along the steps of the MNAC or the plaza - evenings, especially in summer, fill with visitors and cruise-ship groups.
