Plaça de Catalunya is a large central square in Barcelona, Spain, occupying the boundary between the old city (Ciutat Vella) and the Eixample district. It serves as the city’s principal public square and a major meeting point.
The square contains fountains, statues and paved promenades and forms the northern end of La Rambla while also linking to Passeig de Gràcia and other main avenues. It is a primary node for public transport and pedestrian movement across central Barcelona.
The plaza was developed as part of Barcelona’s 19th- and early 20th-century urban expansion to connect the medieval core with the new Eixample grid and has grown into the city’s contemporary civic and commercial centre. It has been repeatedly redesigned to accommodate traffic and pedestrian needs.
Plaça de Catalunya sits roughly at the centre of Barcelona, between the Gothic Quarter and the Eixample, and is easily reached on foot from major central sites and by multiple metro and bus lines.

The Aerobus from Barcelona-El Prat Airport stops at Plaça de Catalunya, and numerous city buses and taxis also serve the square - exits from the station put you directly into the plaza.

- Arrive at Plaça de Catalunya early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the daytime commuter and coach rush; the square is a major transport hub so mid-day is busiest.
- Use the square's metro and regional train interchanges to jump quickly between the Gothic Quarter, Passeig de Gràcia and La Rambla; exit toward Passeig de Gràcia if you want to reach high-end shopping and Gaudí sites with a short walk that most tourists miss when they head straight down La Rambla.
