Pizzo Scalino

Pizzo Scalino is a high Alpine summit in Lombardy, Italy, rising above the Valmalenco valley and forming part of the Rhaetian Alps. It is a recognized mountaineering objective for hikers and climbers in the region.

The mountain offers panoramic views across the surrounding ranges and toward the Bernina massif; from the summit you can see multiple Alpine peaks and broad valleys. Routes vary in difficulty from long hiking ridges to mixed snow and rock passages, with common climbs exceeding 1,200 meters of ascent from valley trailheads.

Alpine-era mountaineering made the peak a regular objective for regional climbers; it has long been accessed from routes on the southern and eastern flanks that connect to historic shepherd and mining tracks. Over time trails and mountain huts in Valmalenco have improved access for summer ascents.

The summit sits above the Valmalenco area in the province of Sondrio, eastern Lombardy, north of the town of Sondrio. The area is characterized by steep glaciated valleys and high Alpine terrain.

• Best time to climb: Most ascents are done in summer and early autumn when routes are largely snow-free; glacier travel can be present on some approaches so crampons and an ice axe may be needed early or late in the season.
