Piz Buin
Mountain Alpine peak on Austrian–Swiss border, popular with hikers.
Piz Buin crowns a Silvretta ridge on the Austria-Switzerland border; its glacier and rocky ridgelines attract mountaineers and high-alpine hikers during summer and ski-tourers in winter.
Piz Buin is a prominent peak in the Silvretta Alps on the border between Austria and Switzerland and is one of the best-known summits in the range. It rises above the surrounding glaciers and serves as a landmark for climbers and ski-tourers.
Routes approach the summit from established glacier basins and mountain huts on both the Austrian Tyrol and Swiss Graubünden sides; conditions require appropriate alpine equipment and experience. The mountain is a common objective for guided climbs and ski-touring traverses during stable conditions.
The Silvretta group where Piz Buin stands has a history of alpine exploration dating to the 19th century and has long-supported a network of alpine huts and marked routes. The landscape combines steep rock, snowfields and glacier slopes typical of the high Alps.
Piz Buin sits on the Austria-Switzerland border in the Silvretta Alps; access approaches are made from valley towns on either side of the range in Tyrol and Graubünden.
- Climbing and ski touring: The summit is commonly climbed from both the Austrian and Swiss sides and is popular with summer alpine mountaineers and winter ski-tourers; glacier travel skills are necessary on standard routes.
Tips for Visiting Piz Buin #
- Approach Piz Buin from the Silvretta pass/Bielerhöhe side for shorter access; the Silvretta Hochalpenstraße (Bielerhöhe) provides the common starting point used by many climbers and hut approaches.
- Treat the ascent as glacier/technical alpine terrain: start very early to reduce crevasse and afternoon storm risk, and use rope, crampons and an experienced mountain guide unless you have certified glacier-alpine experience.
- Use the nearby mountain huts (for example the Wiesbadener Hut on the Austrian side) as staging points to split the climb over two days and to get up-to-date local route and crevasse-condition information.
Best Time to Visit Piz Buin #
Best visited in summer for climbing and hiking; winter is for experienced winter-mountaineering or skiing.
