Pipestone National Monument

Pipestone National Monument preserves a series of pipestone quarries and surrounding prairie in southwestern Minnesota where Native American peoples have quarried red catlinite for pipe-making for centuries. The site emphasizes cultural significance and living traditions connected to the stone.

Interpretive displays and programs at the visitor center explain quarrying methods, cultural uses and the long-distance travel of people to the quarry. Trails cross prairie remnants and lead to the exposed quarry faces, where visitors can see the distinct red stone in situ.

The area has been used as a traditional quarry by many Plains tribes and continues to be a place of ceremonial importance; the monument balances public access with respectful treatment of a sacred resource. The National Park Service manages interpretive programs and works with tribal partners to present cultural context.

The monument is located near the town of Pipestone in southwestern Minnesota and is accessible by road from regional highways.
