Pidhirtsi Castle

Pidhirtsi Castle is a 17th-century palace-fortress in Lviv Oblast, Ukraine, built as an aristocratic residence with defensive features. It is an example of a grand magnate estate combining Renaissance and Baroque architectural elements.

Key components include the ornate main palace, surrounding bastions and moat, and a landscaped park and church complex that formed the core of the estate. The complex was designed both for show and for defence, with richly decorated interiors originally complementing the fortified exterior.

The castle was constructed in the mid 1600s for the Polish magnate Stanisław Koniecpolski and later passed through several noble families. It suffered damage and change of use during the 20th century, including wartime destruction and institutional occupation, and has been the subject of restoration efforts since Ukraine’s independence.

Pidhirtsi stands in the village of Pidhirtsi in Lviv Oblast, within a rural agricultural landscape of western Ukraine, and is visited for its architecture, parkland and ongoing conservation work.
