Picos de Europa is a compact but rugged mountain range in northern Spain, noted for dramatic limestone peaks, deep gorges and high pastures. The range spans parts of Asturias, Cantabria and Castile and León and contains some of Spain’s most popular mountain scenery.
Prominent features include the Torre de Cerredo at 2,648 metres, the glacial Lagos de Covadonga, and the spectacular Cares Gorge with its cliffside walking route. The area supports a mix of hiking, mountaineering and rural mountain pastures with traditional villages and mountain refuges.
The three main massifs are known as the Western (Cornión), Central (Urrieles) and Eastern (Andara) sectors, each offering distinct routes and terrain. Visitor infrastructure includes trail networks, mountain refuges and the Fuente Dé cable car that provides rapid access from the valley to high-slope trails.
