Pico Island
Island Azorean island dominated by Portugal's highest peak, Pico
Pico Island in the Azores features Portugal’s highest peak, Mount Pico, volcanic vineyards classified by UNESCO, and whale-watching waters. Hikers tackle the summit, while visitors tour wineries and natural lava pools.
Pico Island is an island in the central group of the Azores, Portugal, dominated by Mount Pico, a 2,351-metre volcanic peak and the highest point in Portugal. The island is known for its volcanic landscapes, traditional vineyards and maritime heritage.
The volcano, UNESCO-listed vineyard terraces, and extensive lava tubes are principal attractions: mountain hiking to the summit, wine-related cultural tourism, and guided visits of lava caves draw most visitors. The island also has small museums and whaling-era sites that document local history.
Formed by volcanic activity, the island was settled by Portuguese colonists in the 15th century and developed a distinct vineyard culture adapted to the island’s basaltic soils. In recent decades tourism, wine production and protected landscape management have been focal points for conservation and local economy.
Pico lies in the Azores archipelago, across a short ferry crossing from the nearby island of Faial; the main port and entry points are the town of Madalena and small regional airports serving the central group.
- Mount height and ascent: The summit of Mount Pico reaches 2,351 metres and is frequently climbed from the island's main towns using marked trails and guided services.
- Ferry connections: Ferries run between Madalena (Pico) and Horta (Faial), providing a common inter-island connection and views of the channel between the islands.
What to See #
- Mount Pico: The island's central feature is Mount Pico, an active stratovolcano that rises to 2,351 metres and is the highest point in Portugal; it is the main destination for hikers and climbers.
- Vineyard landscape (UNESCO): Traditional vineyard landscapes on lava fields that have been shaped for centuries and are listed by UNESCO as the 'Landscape of the Pico Island Vineyard Culture'.
- Lava tubes and caves: Extensive lava tubes and caves, including Gruta das Torres, the longest known lava tube in Portugal and one of the island's notable geological attractions.
How to Get to Pico Island #
Ferries and aircraft connect Pico to other Azorean islands. Lajes Airport (PIX) on Pico has regular flights to and from São Miguel (Ponta Delgada) and Terceira; SATA/Azores Airlines operates year-round. Ferries link Pico with Faial (Horta) in about 30-45 minutes; seasonal services connect to São Jorge and São Miguel.
Tips for Visiting Pico Island #
- Climb Mount Pico early-start around 2-3 a.m. in high season to reach the summit for sunrise and avoid afternoon cloud.
- Book local guides for the ascent and for vineyard visits: Pico's microclimate and trails are deceptively changeable.
- Taste vinho da vinha do Pico (volcanic wine) in Lajido da Criação Velha - the UNESCO-designated vineyard landscape; visit the cooperative for a guided tasting.
