Pico do Príncipe crowns Príncipe island with cloud-forested slopes and trails to the summit; visitors take guided hikes for endemic birdwatching and sweeping views over the Gulf of Guinea.
Pico do Príncipe is the highest mountain on Príncipe island, part of the nation of São Tomé and Príncipe; it reaches roughly 948 metres above sea level. The summit and surrounding slopes lie within the island’s protected forest areas.
Hikers follow forested trails through montane and cloud forest to reach viewpoints near the summit, where there are broad views over the island and the Gulf of Guinea. The mountain’s slopes are important for endemic plants and birds, and are a focus for nature-oriented visits.
The peak is volcanic in origin and has always been a natural landmark rather than a constructed site. In the 20th and 21st centuries the area gained protection as part of local conservation efforts to preserve Príncipe’s unique ecosystems.
Geographically the mountain occupies the interior high ground of Príncipe in the Autonomous Region of Príncipe. The main settlement on the island, Santo António, lies on the coast; the peak stands inland within the island’s central massif.
- Conservation status: The peak is the highest point on Príncipe and sits inside the island's protected areas, noted for cloud forest and endemic species.
