Pico Cão Grande is a dramatic volcanic plug on São Tomé island in the nation of São Tomé and Príncipe, noted for its near-vertical, needle-like profile. The feature rises conspicuously above the surrounding rainforest and is a landmark within the island’s central highlands.

The spire itself rises roughly 370 metres above the surrounding terrain, forming a prominent basalt tower that attracts photographers and experienced climbers. There are no visitor facilities at the base and approaches traverse dense tropical forest.

Pico Cão Grande formed as a volcanic intrusion and has remained as a resistant plug after surrounding material eroded away; it is set within the island’s volcanic landscape and associated montane forest. The surrounding area is part of protected forest and is important for endemic plants and birds.

It sits inland on São Tomé island within the central mountainous interior and is located inside the island’s forested zone. The feature is accessible only by trails through dense rainforest from nearby settlements and parks.

  • Climbing: The spire rises sharply from rainforest and is visible from surrounding forested plateaus; climbing the rock requires technical rock-climbing skills and specialised equipment.
