Piazzale Michelangelo is a prominent panoramic square on the south bank of the Arno in Florence, Tuscany, created in the 19th century as part of the city’s reorganisation. It is one of Florence’s best-known viewpoints and gives a comprehensive overview of the historic centre.

The main highlight is the broad terrace offering uninterrupted views of the Duomo (Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore), Palazzo Vecchio, and the Ponte Vecchio; the terrace is large enough to accommodate hundreds of visitors and photographers. Bronze copies of Michelangelo’s sculptures, including a full-size replica of the David, stand on the piazzale and are focal points for visitors.

Built and laid out by the architect Giuseppe Poggi during the late 19th century, the piazzale was part of urban works carried out when Florence served briefly as Italy’s capital. Over time it has become a regular stop on walking routes and bus tours around the city.

The piazzale sits on a hill in the Oltrarno district, roughly a short walk or a few minutes by bus south of Florence’s historic centre and the Arno river. It is reachable on foot via a long staircase from the riverside or by road transport with parking nearby.
