Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II is a large public square in the Esquilino quarter of Rome, named after Italy’s first king, Victor Emmanuel II. It was laid out during Rome’s post-unification urban expansion in the late 19th century.
A broad rectangular green space dominates the centre of the square, surrounded by long porticoed and residential buildings from the late 1800s, offering seating, tree cover and pedestrian routes. The square functions as a neighbourhood hub with markets, eateries and entry points to nearby streets and transport links.
The square was created during Rome’s transformation after unification when new districts and grand boulevards were built to accommodate the growing capital. It has since served as a commercial and social centre for the Esquilino area.
Situated on the Esquilino hill, the square is east of Rome’s historical core, within walking distance of Termini station and roughly 1.5 to 2 kilometres from the Colosseum and central archaeological sites.
