Piazza Maggiore

Piazza Maggiore is the main public square in central Bologna, Emilia-Romagna, and the historic civic heart of the city. It is bounded by important medieval and Renaissance buildings and serves as the focal point for public life.

The square is edged by the Basilica di San Petronio, the Palazzo d’Accursio (the municipal palace), the Palazzo dei Notai and other historic palaces, and features the 16th-century Fountain of Neptune by Giambologna. The plaza hosts markets, public events and is a primary arrival point for visitors exploring central Bologna.

Construction of San Petronio began in 1390 and the square developed in the later medieval period as Bologna consolidated its communal institutions; the Fountain of Neptune was completed in the 16th century. Piazza Maggiore remains an active civic space and a starting point for tours of the city’s medieval centre.

Geographically the square is in the historic core of Bologna, within walking distance of the city’s major streets and transport hubs, and is easily reached on foot from surrounding piazzas and the central station area.
