Piazza del Duomo
Square Cathedral square in Pisa featuring the Leaning Tower
The Piazza del Duomo in Pisa, Tuscany, is the cathedral square that contains the city’s major medieval monuments and is one of Italy’s most visited architectural ensembles; building on the site began in the 11th century. The ensemble is commonly called the Piazza dei Miracoli and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The square’s best-known feature is the Leaning Tower, a freestanding campanile about 56 metres tall whose construction began in 1173 and whose tilt is the square’s defining visual characteristic. The Duomo di Pisa is a large Romanesque cathedral begun in 1063 and consecrated in the early 12th century; its marble facade, nave and mosaic-decorated interior attract large numbers of visitors.
The complex also includes the circular Baptistery, whose construction began in 1152 and which is often described as the largest baptistery in Italy, and the Camposanto Monumentale, a cloistered cemetery begun in the late 13th century. The nearby Museo dell’Opera conserves original sculptures and artworks removed from the outdoor monuments.
The cathedral complex was built by the maritime Republic of Pisa across the 11th to 14th centuries as an expression of civic pride and religious devotion. Construction phases spanned centuries, producing the mixture of Romanesque and later Gothic details seen today; repair and conservation work has been ongoing, including major stabilization of the Leaning Tower in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
The square sits in the northern part of Pisa’s historic centre in Tuscany, a short walk from the city center and the Arno River and roughly 80 kilometres west of Florence. The ensemble occupies a single green lawn bounded by pedestrian paths and roads within the city.
- Best visiting times: Best to arrive early morning or late afternoon to avoid the largest tour groups and get clearer views of the monuments.
- Tower access: Climbing the Leaning Tower requires a timed-entry ticket and a short interior stair climb; space is limited so book ahead during high season.
- UNESCO listing: The complex is part of the Piazza dei Miracoli UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed for its outstanding medieval architecture.

- Cathedral (Duomo di Pisa): A Romanesque cathedral whose construction began in 1063 and which was consecrated in the early 12th century; the marble-facade building forms the architectural center of the square.
- Baptistery (Battistero di San Giovanni): An ornate circular baptistery whose construction began in 1152 and continued into the 14th century; commonly cited as the largest baptistery in Italy.
- Camposanto Monumentale: A cloistered monumental cemetery begun in the late 13th century, enclosing funerary monuments and decorative sculpture; occupies the north side of the square.
- Museo dell'Opera del Duomo: A museum that conserves and exhibits original sculptures, mosaics and paintings removed from the monuments in the square; located adjacent to the cathedral complex.
