Piasa
Archaeological Site River bluff painting depicting the Native American Piasa bird
Cliff pictograph of the Piasa Bird near Alton on the Mississippi River; visitors arrive for bluff views, local Native American folklore and riverside walks.
Piasa refers to a painted and stylized bird figure on the limestone bluffs above the Mississippi River near the town of Alton in Illinois, United States. The image and its associated legend are part of local Indigenous and settler folklore and have been reproduced and restored over time.
The original figure was recorded by early European explorers and later repainted in different versions as the original natural pigment faded. The contemporary mural on the bluff is a modern rendition meant to preserve the motif and its place in regional identity.
The bluff and image stand above the river and are visible from riverboats and nearby vantage points along the Alton riverside. The site is a roadside and riverside landmark rather than a developed tourist complex.
Geographically the painted bluff is on the Mississippi River’s eastern bank at Alton, Illinois, approximately north of the St. Louis metropolitan area and accessible from local roads and riverfront viewpoints.
- Setting and significance: The painted figure is on a limestone bluff above the Mississippi River near Alton and is a regional cultural symbol with origins in Native American legend.
Tips for Visiting Piasa #
- For the Piasa Bird overlook, aim for late afternoon when sun angle brings out the painted figure on the Mississippi bluff and the river light is more photogenic.
- Access the main viewpoints and interpretive trail from the roadside park/overlook rather than trying to view from the riverbank; official overlooks provide the clearest views and parking.
- Combine the stop with nearby Alton attractions - many visitors drive past the Piasa outlook without visiting the small trail and interpretive panels that explain the legend and local Indigenous history.
