How to Get to Phuntsholing

Phuentsholing (Phuntsholing) sits on Bhutan's southern border with India and is most commonly reached overland via Indian railheads and airports (Hasimara rail station and Bagdogra airport). There is no international airport in Phuentsholing itself; cross-border road transfers are the practical route.

By Air

Bagdogra Airport (IXB), India: Phuentsholing/Phuntsholing is usually reached overland from Indian airports such as Bagdogra or from Kolkata; international flights into Bhutan itself go to Paro, not Phuentsholing. From Bagdogra the road journey to the Bhutan border is several hours and then onward to Phuentsholing across the border.

Paro Airport (PBH): For internal travel to Phuentsholing you can also fly into Paro and travel by road across the country, but that is a long drive (several hours) and not the usual route for southern border crossings.

By Train & Bus

Train: The nearest Indian railhead for Phuentsholing is Hasimara (HSA) in West Bengal; Hasimara is commonly used by travellers crossing into Phuentsholing by road (short taxi or bus from Hasimara).

Bus: Regular buses and shared taxis ply the routes from Hasimara and nearby Indian towns to Phuentsholing. Overland travellers coming from India usually travel by train to Hasimara or by bus to the border and then cross at the immigration checkpoint into Phuentsholing.

How to Get Around Phuntsholing #

Phuntsholing (Phuentsholing) is a border commercial hub that you can explore on foot within the main market and shopping streets. For travel farther inland, shared taxis, buses and private cars connect to other Bhutanese towns; within town, auto-rickshaws are not used in Bhutan but taxis and walking are common.

Cross-border traffic can be busy at the India-Bhutan border; if arriving by road, confirm vehicle and permit arrangements in advance and expect short taxi rides to cost a few hundred ngultrum.

Nightlife in Phuntsholing #

Phuntsholing’s evenings are busier than many Bhutanese towns thanks to border trade - you’ll find a range of restaurants and hotel bars where people gather after dark. Still, options are more functional than entertainment-focused: expect dining and casual drinks rather than a vibrant club scene.

Shopping in Phuntsholing #

Phuntsholing is one of Bhutan’s busiest commercial towns, with a lively market area selling garments, electronics, groceries and Indian goods. You’ll find a mix of everyday shopping and small shops carrying textiles and household items targeted at cross-border trade.

Bargaining is common in markets; if you need branded goods, larger shops closer to the main roads carry them.
