Phou Bia is the highest mountain in Laos, rising to an elevation of 2,819 metres and forming a prominent peak within the Annamite Range. It is the country’s tallest summit and a notable geographic landmark.

Access is limited and the mountain is remote with few developed tourist facilities; where trips do occur they involve lengthy approaches and basic mountain tracks. The summit area is generally sparsely vegetated compared with lower forested slopes and can be significantly cooler than the lowlands.

The mountain and surrounding highlands have been of strategic and local importance over the 20th century; parts of the area have been used by national authorities and have restricted access at times. Land use has included shepherding and limited upland agriculture.

Located in Xiangkhouang province in north-central Laos, Phou Bia sits within the Annamite Range and dominates the surrounding plateau and valleys.

  • Highest point: At 2,819 metres above sea level it is the highest point in Laos and can have markedly cooler temperatures than surrounding lowlands.

How to Get to Phou Bia #

Phou Bia is the highest peak in Laos on the Xiangkhouang Plateau and lies in a remote, mountainous and historically restricted area. Access is difficult and typically requires arranging a local guide, permissions from authorities and travel by 4x4 on rough, unpaved roads from the nearest towns (such as Phonsavan). Visitors should confirm current access rules and safety with local officials before planning travel.

Tips for Visiting Phou Bia #

  • Phou Bia is Laos's highest peak and lies in a very remote, mountainous area-do not attempt an independent climb; secure a local guide and written permission from provincial authorities before planning access due to remoteness and restricted zones.
  • Plan any visit in the dry season (roughly November-March) to avoid monsoon-related road closures and very muddy tracks; even then expect long multi-day travel logistics from major towns and limited on-site services.

Best Time to Visit Phou Bia #

Because Phou Bia is high and often much cooler than the lowlands, the dry season (November-February) gives the clearest and most comfortable conditions for visiting.

Dry season (clearest views)
November-February · Lower elevations: 15-25°C; summit often below 10°C
Cooler, drier weather offers the best chance for clear views from Phou Bia; mountain conditions are significantly cooler than the lowlands.
Wet and hot seasons
March-October · Lower elevations: 20-30°C; summit can be near or below freezing at times
The hot season brings heat at lower elevations; the rainy season brings fog, cloud and reduced visibility on the mountain - expect colder conditions near the summit year-round.
