Park Large Dublin park featuring the zoo and presidential residence
On Dublin’s northwestern edge, Phoenix Park is a vast urban green with a resident herd of fallow deer, Dublin Zoo and the presidential residence Áras an Uachtaráin. Locals use it for cycling and picnics.
Phoenix Park is a large enclosed urban park in Dublin, Ireland, covering roughly 707 hectares (about 1,750 acres) and noted for its size and range of public facilities.
The park contains formal gardens, wide tree-lined avenues, a resident herd of fallow deer, the well-known Dublin Zoo, the presidential residence Áras an Uachtaráin and the Wellington Monument. Extensive walking and cycling routes cross the park and there are open lawns used for recreation and events.
Originally laid out in the 17th century as a royal hunting park, it evolved over time into public parkland with planted avenues and formal features. Elements of the landscape and monuments date from successive centuries as the park’s public role expanded.
Phoenix Park lies to the northwest of Dublin’s central commercial district on the north bank of the River Liffey, forming a green belt between the city centre and outlying suburbs.
- Best visiting times: Early morning and late afternoon are the quietest times to see the park's deer herd and to walk long avenues without crowds.
- Access notes: Dublin Zoo is inside the park and requires a separate admission ticket; the presidential residence and some official grounds are not open to the public.

- Dublin Zoo and Áras an Uachtaráin: Home to Dublin Zoo and the official residence of the President of Ireland, offering separate visitor facilities and formal grounds within the larger park.
- Wellington Monument: A tall obelisk monument commemorating the Duke of Wellington sits on a hill within the park and provides broad views across the grounds.
How to Get to Phoenix Park #
Phoenix Park is a large public park immediately west of Dublin city centre. The park is within easy reach from Heuston Station (roughly a 10-15 minute walk to the Parkgate Street entrances) and from central Dublin by numerous Dublin Bus routes that run along Parkgate Street and the North Circular Road. If driving, follow the North Circular Road (R101) or Parkgate Street into the park; on-foot access from the city centre typically takes 20-30 minutes depending on your starting point.
Tips for Visiting Phoenix Park #
- Enter the park early in the morning on weekdays to see the resident fallow deer grazing with far fewer people around; dawn is also the calmest time for cycling or running routes inside the park.
- Use entrances near Heuston Gate or the south/west gates (Royal Hospital Kilmainham area) if you want to reach quieter western lawns and the deer herd - the main east gates near the city get busier with tourists and event traffic.
- If you're avoiding crowds, steer clear of weekends and days when the park hosts large events (check Dublin city listings); those draw locals and visitors to central lawns and paths.
Best Time to Visit Phoenix Park #
Best late spring through summer (May-September) for green landscapes, outdoor events and long daylight hours.
