Phimai Historical Park
Archaeological Site Khmer temple complex predating Angkor, in northeastern Thailand
Northeastern Thailand’s Phimai Historical Park displays a large Khmer temple complex predating Angkor; tourists come for stone reliefs, restored gopuras and proximity to Phimai town’s local markets and museums.
Phimai Historical Park is a major Angkorian-era Khmer temple complex in Nakhon Ratchasima province in northeastern Thailand, with principal constructions dating to the late 11th and early 12th centuries. It is one of the largest Khmer monuments on Thai territory and retains significant stone carving and architectural features.
The complex was constructed under the Khmer Empire during the Angkorian period for Hindu worship and royal or ceremonial use; inscriptions and stylistic features place most major work in the late 11th to early 12th centuries. Over time the site fell out of use, and 20th-century archaeological work and conservation have aimed to stabilise and restore structures and protect carved stonework.
The park sits within Phimai district in Nakhon Ratchasima province, embedded in a lowland agricultural landscape; the town of Phimai lies adjacent to the site and the provincial city of Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat) is the nearest major urban centre. The complex is accessible by road from surrounding towns and is a regional cultural landmark.
- Significance: The site is one of the largest and most important Khmer monuments in Thailand and displays Angkor-period architectural features and reliefs.
- Best light: The best time for photography is early morning or late afternoon light when shadows accentuate the carved sandstone reliefs.
What to See #
- Prasat Hin (central sanctuary): The central Khmer temple complex with a sandstone sanctuary and laterite foundations dating mainly to the late 11th and early 12th centuries.
- Causeway and Naga Bridges: A carved processional causeway and naga balustrades that lead toward the main temple and mark the ceremonial approach.
- Phimai Museum: A small on-site museum that displays fragments, inscriptions and objects recovered from excavations in the park.
How to Get to Phimai Historical Park #
Phimai Historical Park sits immediately adjacent to Phimai town. You can reach Phimai by intercity train from Bangkok’s Hua Lamphong station (some services stop at Phimai) or by bus to Phimai; from the town center the park is a short tuk‑tuk ride or a 10-20 minute walk. If driving, follow local roads into Phimai and follow signs to the park.
Tips for Visiting Phimai Historical Park #
- Aim to arrive at opening or late afternoon to see Phimai in soft light and before regional tour buses fill the site; mornings are especially pleasant for photography of the main sanctuary.
- Enter the complex from the main east approach to experience the original ceremonial axis and the causeway alignment as intended; many visitors enter from the opposite side and miss the axial procession route.
- Include a stop at the nearby Phimai National Museum - it provides context and labelled finds that explain the Khmer masonry and iconography most casual visitors overlook.
