Phillip Island
Island Coastal island famous for little penguin parade
Phillip Island draws visitors for the nightly Little Penguin parade at Summerland Beach, seal and seabird colonies, surf beaches and the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit’s motorsport events.
Phillip Island is an island and holiday destination in Victoria, Australia, known for wildlife, coastal scenery and motorsport. It is particularly famous for the nightly little penguin return at Summerland Beach.
Major draws include the Penguin Parade at dusk, boardwalks and sea-cliff views at The Nobbies with sightings toward Seal Rocks, and the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit which hosts major racing events. The island also supports koala populations viewable at the Koala Conservation Centre and numerous coastal walking tracks.
The island developed for tourism in the 20th century with protected reserves established to manage wildlife and visitor access. Conservation management regulates close encounters to protect breeding animals, especially penguins and seals.
Phillip Island sits off Victoria’s south coast and is connected to the mainland by a bridge; it is a common short drive from Melbourne and regional centres to the north.
- Penguin Parade timing and tickets: Penguin viewing is best at dusk when penguins return ashore; tickets are managed and often sell out in peak season, so booking ahead is advised.
- Access from the mainland: The island is linked to the mainland by a bridge and is commonly visited as a day trip from Melbourne though accommodation is available for multi-day stays.
What to See #
- Penguin Parade (Summerland Beach): A nightly wildlife viewing event where little penguins return from the sea to nest at Summerland Beach; access is managed by Parks Victoria with viewing platforms.
- The Nobbies and Seal Rocks viewing area: A coastal boardwalk and viewing area with sea cliffs, blowholes and lookouts that also provides views toward a large offshore seal colony.
- Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit: A motorsport circuit that hosts car and motorcycle racing events and public track days, with a visitor complex and museum.
- Koala Conservation Centre: A reserve focused on koala habitat where boardwalks allow close observation of wild koalas in eucalyptus woodland.
How to Get to Phillip Island #
From Melbourne drive about 140 km southeast to Phillip Island (roughly 90-120 minutes) via the M1/Monash Freeway and then the South Gippsland/Bass Highway routes to San Remo, crossing the bridge onto the island. V/Line and private coach operators provide limited public transport toward the island and to Cowes; once on Phillip Island most visitors use a car-key viewing areas (e.g., Penguin Parade at Summerland) are a short drive from Cowes.
Tips for Visiting Phillip Island #
- Book Penguin Parade tickets and on-site parking in advance and plan to arrive at least 60-90 minutes before dusk to secure a good vantage point and watch the penguins gather on the shoreline.
- Combine an afternoon visit to the Nobbies and boardwalk (for seal and coastline views) with the evening penguin viewing - the Nobbies is less crowded in late afternoon and gives different wildlife opportunities than the Parade.
- Avoid weekend coach-peak times by staying overnight on the island (Cowes or nearby towns); many day-trippers from Melbourne make evenings and early mornings noticeably quieter.
Best Time to Visit Phillip Island #
Visit in summer for warm weather and full activity (but expect crowds); autumn offers a quieter experience with pleasant conditions.
